CAUSES:
The reason why Korean orphans lack access to adequate educational opportunities is because of rigid cultural values and views towards orphans which has made it increasingly difficult for them to achieve success within their society. According to Haruch’s article, “In Korea Adoptees Fight to Change Culture That Sent Them Overseas,” South Korean orphans face a prevailing stigma which damages their identity and capability to be able to obtain advancement in work and other aspects of life. Because of conditions in orphanages, young Korean orphans lack adequate attention and care that a normal toddler would receive. Additionally, society has pushed orphans into jobs that are aimed for working in the factories rather than in academically rigorous professions. On top of that, orphans usually do not have the financial means to pay for college expenses which sets them back further than other peers their age. The reason why all of this happens is because of mentality that exists in which orphans are stigmatized and bullied for a circumstance that they have no control over.
